Interview a Healthy Hometown Hero! Win Prizes! Get Published!

Heroes are all around us and their achievements-- great and small-- inspire others. Students are invited to step into the role of a newspaper reporter and write a real-life story about a Hometown Hero!

HOW IT WORKS:

Any individual, teacher, school, or community organization can submit entries. Register Here for more details on your local contest, including where and how to submit your entries.

Entries are reviewed on a local level and one winner from each grade level will be selected. Local winners will be entered in the National Contest, where they will compete for the Grand Prize.

The Kid Scoop Healthy Hometown Heroes Contest is open to all students in grades 3-6.

HOW TO ENTER:

Participating students first interview someone in their community who promotes healthy living, fitness, or nutrition. They should find out what that person does, why they do it, how it helps others be healther, and any advice or message they might have for the people in their community.

Participants then write a newspaper article about their "Healthy Hometown Hero"-- being sure to answer "Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How." Ideas for "Healthy Heroes" include P.E. teachers, chefs who specialize in healthy cuisine, local farmers, fitness or sports coaches, nutritionists... Use your imagination and ask around-- these types of "Healthy Hometown Heroes" abound!

  • February 27 - March 5: How to conduct an interview
  • March 6 - 12: Put it all together and write a winning article!

TEACHERS AND PARENTS: You can help your students write winning entries!

Our Hometown Heroes Teacher's Guide provides lessons to take students through the interviewing and writing process. Use this guide to  teach students critical listening, speaking, reading, writing, and research skills. Using your local newspaper as a primary resource, this program introduces students to the principles of journalism and provides them with first-hand experience on what it's like to be a newspaper reporter.
