At the Kid Scoop Foundation, we believe that the most effective way to encourage positive life choices among young people is to foster dialogue. By teaching students the principles of investigative journalism and challenging them to engage directly with the issues that confront their communities, we empower young people to speak up and be their own advocates. The Kid Scoop Foundation seeks to provide young journalists with appropriate publishing outlets to cultivate peer and adult readership and deepen their understanding of the role of the free press.

The Kid Scoop Foundation was founded in 2007 just as the entire newspaper industry went into upheaval. As a non-profit institution dedicated to expanding student interaction with their local newspapers, what concerns us the most is ensuring that quality news resources remain available, accessible, and low-cost to students in every classroom and of every age. Behind this mission is the firm belief that constant exposure to quality news articles from elementary through high school ultimately produces critically thinking, socially responsible citizens who actively engage and ameliorate the world around them.

Since 2007, there has been continued discussion about the future of journalism as we progress into the digital age. At a time when information is more prolific than it is dependable, one issue seldom considered is how to instill in our youth the meaning and value of responsible journalism. If we are to secure for ourselves a new generation of conscientious reporters and judicious readers who recognize and demand quality journalism, we need to start teaching our young people how to read and comprehend news articles and critically analyze the information therein.
